ענק
The assumed root ענק ('nq) is of unclear meaning. There are similar words in cognate languages that range in meaning from neck and necklace to the more general gem. The usage of its derivations in the Bible seems to suggest that the root meaning has more to do with ornamentation or opulence than with the neck per se:
- The masculine noun ענק (anaq) means necklace and is used in the Song of Solomon 4:9, Judges 8:26 and figuratively in Proverbs 1:9.
- The denominative verb ענק (anaq), meaning to serve as a necklace (Psalm 73:6) or figuratively to bestow someone with riches (Deuteronomy 15:14).
