כבה

The verb כבה (kaba) means to extinguish: to put out a fire or to let a fire go out: "For lack of wood the fire goes out" (Proverbs 26:20).

Curiously, this verb nearly always appears in the negative and thus commonly refers to fires or lamps that cannot or should not be extinguished: "The fire on the altar shall be kept burning on it. It shall not go out (Leviticus 6:12-13). "Her lamp does not go out at night" (Proverbs 31:18). "Many waters cannot quench love" (Song of Solomon 8:7).

Our verb is also used to describe the extinguishing or turning off of a lamp (נר, ner), specifically the "lamp of God" in the tabernacle (1 Samuel 3:3), or the "lamp of Israel" (2 Samuel 21:17). Likewise, through Ezekiel, YHWH proclaims that he will extinguish Egypt (Ezekiel 32:7).

Very frequently, this verb relates to the wrath of God, which is a consuming fire (Deuteronomy 4:24, Isaiah 30:27) that cannot be extinguished (2 Kings 22:17, Isaiah 1:31, 34:10, 66:24, Jeremiah 4:4, 7:20, 17:27, 21:12, Ezekiel 20:47-48, Amos 5:6).
